Renowned documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has once again produced a compelling and extremely thorough tale of American history.

For those of you were not able to check out Ken Burns’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, the following link http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/ has loads of clips and information enough for one to salivate over and digest for hours and hours. (I use such strange verbs for effect.  As anyone who knows Burns work, knows he is not in the business of fast food burgers, but rather a craftsman of slow, sautéed steaks).

The series, divided into six parts, chronicles the history of the National Parks and frames it amidst the perpetual redefining and questioning of the words America was founded upon, “freedom” and “democracy.”

The shots of the National Parks themselves will take you by surprise.  I had no idea that we had such serene and exotic landscape in our own backyard.  It truly appears to be from a different planet.  And in many respects it is, since the land is preserved in a time before humanity.

Let us continue to help the earth by preserving such “unearthliness.”  If we don’t start implementing very small eco-friendly changes in our lifestyles now, one day the images from Burn’s film may be all that’s left of our exquisite natural history/legacy.
